Some of the most enjoyable projects we've had have been leisure and tourism schemes. Caravan parks, equestrian centres, golf clubhouses, and buildings that exist to be somewhere people want to spend time.
They're less common than extensions and industrial work, but they suit us.
What have you designed?
A caravan park in the Golden Valley near Ripley, and an equestrian centre in the same area.

What's different about leisure projects?
Where the building sits matters more than on almost any other project. These buildings are usually in open countryside or on the edge of a settlement, and the surroundings are the reason people visit in the first place. A building that looks out of place in that setting puts visitors off, and that costs the business inside it.
Planning is generally harder as a result. Development in the open countryside needs justifying, and councils look closely at landscape impact, highways and whether the use is appropriate in that location. Green Belt sites are harder again. We handle the whole planning application process, including the landscape and access evidence these schemes usually need.
Public access changes the design. These buildings take people who don't know them, including families and visitors with disabilities, so Part M access requirements are more involved than on a private house.
And seasonality affects the build. A caravan park can rarely take a construction programme through the summer, so phasing and programme have to be designed around the trading year.
Do you work for operators as well as developers?
Both. Some of this work is a new development from scratch. A lot of it is an existing operator extending, upgrading facilities, or replacing a building that's reached the end of its life while keeping the site trading.
